Taxpayers may face consequences after the property tax due date
LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – June 30 was the last day to pay property taxes to the city of Laredo, Webb County, school districts and colleges.
For those who have not paid on time, an additional charge will be added to your bill. City of Laredo Assessor-Collector Dora Maldonado said that on Friday, July 1, all accounts that remain unpaid would have 15% attorney’s fees, in addition to the normal 18% penalty and fine. interest and total a total of 33% percent additional interest rates. That’s only for the city, not including Webb County, Laredo School Districts, and Laredo College.
However, Maldonado said that for people who still don’t pay their taxes, other legal consequences may arise. “If they don’t pay, we may take legal action against those taxpayers. Filing a lawsuit incurs additional costs, such as court fees, abstract fees, and other fees associated with a lawsuit,” Maldonado said. She added that other payment plans were available. One of them was the split payment plan where people could pay what they owed in two installments throughout the year.
However, those who missed the split payment deadline, which was last week, will be charged a 13% fee on their tax payment and the fee will continue to increase each month.
Maldonado encourages taxpayers to pay their property taxes even if they miss their due date.
